Ensuring consistency of mechanics and adherence to submission and formatting guidelines. Check of grammar, spelling, and punctuation plus attention to content and style. Consideration of word usage, logic, and clarity at the sentence and paragraph levels in relation to target audience. Corrections to content within tables, charts, figures, captions, and front and back matter.

Structural Editing

 

Significant revision and reorganization to improve clarity of content and structure. Emphasis on focus, flow, consistency, and integrity of ideas. Intensive style work to address redundancy, wordiness, and organizational weakness.

Developmental Editing

 

Assistance with conceptualizing and actualizing multistage projects. Facilitated brainstorming, outlining/storyboarding, iterative review, structural editing and/or copyediting to develop and strengthen manuscripts or effect large rewrites. Changes suggested to or drafted for author as agreed.

Proofreading / Formatting

 

Review of edited manuscripts prior to submission or publication. Correction of irregularities in text and formatting; verification of adherence to submission guidelines. Edited manuscript with identified style required.

Accessibility / Section 508 Compliance

 

Review of .docx and .pdf files to ensure all content is accessible to individuals with disabilities per federal guidelines. Verification of styles, headings, lists, links, tables, and contrast; generation of tags and alternative text.  

Writing / Revising

 

Drafting of original text or heavy revision of extant text with attention to subject, purpose, form, genre, and target audience. Content generated for or in collaboration with author as agreed with regard to their stated publication and expression goals.

Project Management

 

Required for all open projects. Overseeing workflow, document sharing, and communications with authors and publishing teams to ensure a project’s timely and efficient movement through the production process.
